Coylton Greener Grid Park
Coylton Greener Grid Park is a project to install a Greener Grid Park directly beside the existing National Grid Substation at Coylton.
Statkraft received planning consent for the first phase of Coylton Greener Grid Park in East Ayrshire in February 2024. The initial phase of the project a 50MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project commenced construction in July 2024.
A Greener Grid Park is a facility with zero-carbon technology, like large flywheels and batteries, that provides stability services to the electricity grid, allowing more renewable energy (wind/solar) to be used without fossil fuels, essentially acting as a renewable energy buffer to prevent blackouts and balance supply and demand. They look like simple buildings (barns, warehouses) but house sophisticated machines that mimic traditional power plants' spinning turbines without emissions, reducing reliance on gas and coal.
